Why Kognie Asks Questions Before Generating — and Why That Matters

The Problem With "Just Type a Prompt"

Most AI image tools ask for a single prompt and generate immediately. This puts the entire burden of specifying the design on the user — and most people, including experienced marketers, don't naturally think in the level of detail an AI model needs to produce a genuinely good result.

Consider the difference between these two starting points for the same task:

  • "Make a social post for our new line of vacuum cleaners"
  • "Make a social post for our new line of vacuum cleaners, targeting existing customers on Instagram, with the goal of driving pre-orders before the price increases next week, in a tone that feels urgent but not pushy."

The second version will produce a dramatically better design — not because the AI is smarter, but because it has actual information to work with. Kognie's conversational approach exists to get a user from the first version to something like the second, without requiring them to know in advance what information matters.

What Kognie Actually Asks About

Purpose and goal

Is this design meant to be a product announcement or a flash-sale? A post for a product announcement should not look the same as one for a flash-sale, even for the same product — the goal changes what should be visually emphasized.

Audience

A design aimed at existing loyal customers can assume familiarity and use an insider tone. A design aimed at cold prospects needs to establish context and credibility from nothing. The same product benefit might be the headline for one audience and a supporting detail for another.

Platform and format

An Instagram Story, a LinkedIn post, and a printed flyer have different dimensions, different attention spans, and different visual conventions. Kognie asks early so the Layout Agent can design for the right canvas from the start, rather than producing something generic that then needs reworking.

Tone and brand fit

Where Kognie doesn't already have strong brand context for a user, it asks enough about tone — formal or casual, bold or understated — to brief the Style and Brand agents appropriately.

Why This Beats a Single Detailed Prompt

It's reasonable to ask: if the user could just include all this detail in one long prompt, would that achieve the same result? In practice, no — for two reasons.

First, most users don't know in advance which details matter. A conversational system can ask specifically for the information that changes the outcome, rather than relying on the user to guess what's relevant and include it unprompted.

Second, a conversation allows Kognie to ask follow-up questions based on what the user has already said, narrowing in on the right brief progressively rather than requiring it all to be specified perfectly in one go. This mirrors how a human designer actually works with a client — through a discovery conversation, not a single brief document.

This Doesn't Mean Endless Questions

Kognie calibrates how much it asks based on what it already knows. If you've used Kognie before and have an established Brand Profile, it already knows your tone, your colors, and your typical audience — so it asks less. If you give a highly detailed brief upfront, Kognie recognizes that and skips questions you've already answered. The conversational step scales to how much is genuinely unknown, not a fixed checklist every time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I skip the questions and just get a design immediately?

Yes. If you provide a complete brief upfront, or if you simply want a fast first draft, you can tell Kognie to proceed directly — it will make reasonable assumptions and flag them so you can adjust afterwards.

Does Kognie ask the same questions every time?

No. The questions adapt based on what Kognie already knows about your brand and what you've already specified in the brief, so returning users are asked progressively less over time.

Why not just let me write a very detailed prompt instead?

You can — Kognie accepts detailed prompts and will use that information directly. The conversational approach exists for the more common case where a user doesn't yet know which details will matter to the outcome.

What happens if I don't answer one of Kognie's questions?

Kognie proceeds with a reasonable assumption for that detail and flags it in the draft, so you can correct it in review rather than being blocked from getting a first result.
